THE FIRST LOOK AT A SCAM CALLED LOVE: THE EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE OF THE ANTICPATED ROMCOM

The highly anticipated South African romcom A Scam Called Love is set to make its nationwide debut in cinemas on Friday, 7 March 2025. Ahead of its release, an exclusive screening was held on the evening of 27 February 2025 at Nu Metro Hyde Park Corner, bringing together a star-studded guest list of celebrities, media personalities, industry friends, and the film’s cast and production team for a first look at the movie that promises to be a fan favourite.

Starring Didintle “Didi” Khunou as the ambitious chef Zola and UK actor Tobi Batemfa as the charismatic Julian, A Scam Called Love follows the story of two unlikely partners who fake a marriage to deceive the authorities—only to find that outsmarting the law is far easier than fooling the nosy, chaotic, and drama-filled Cele family. The film boasts an all-star cast, including Fezile Mpela as Zola’s free-spirited father, Brenda Ngxoli (The Ice Queen) as her cutthroat mother, and Thando Thabethe as her conniving cousin. Other notable cast members include Motlatsi Mafatshe, Siphokazi Khuboni, Trevor Gumbi, Rendani Mufamadi, TJ Ngoma, Lwazilubanzi Mthembu, and Martial T Batchamen.

The exclusive screening offered cast members their first glimpse of their performances, and the excitement was palpable. The audience erupted in laughter, embracing the film’s sharp humor, clever storytelling, and unique South African charm

At the helm of this refreshingly chaotic yet heartwarming romcom are Carla Fonseca Mokgata and Nthato Mokgata (aka Spoek Mathambo), who co-wrote and co-produced the film. Speaking about the inspiration behind A Scam Called Love, Nthato Mokgata shared: “We wanted to make a film that wasn’t just funny, but cleverly chaotic, deeply South African, and effortlessly stylish a romcom that hits with both sharp wit and real heart.” His wife Carla Fonseca Mokgata added; “at its core, A Scam Called Love is a love letter to South African humor, resilience, and reinvention. We hope audiences walk away laughing, maybe even thinking a little, and most importantly feeling seen. And if you ever consider scamming your way to love, well… make sure you get the right partner in crime.”
