Sprite has unveiled an extraordinary collaboration with renowned South African artist Karabo Poppy as part of the much-anticipated Sprite Limelight Season 3. This collaboration has resulted in a striking mural adorning the facade of Cheeky’s on Bree Street in the heart of Braamfontein. A vibrant tribute to the essence of South African hip-hop culture, this piece of public art celebrates both artistic expression and self-belief, while also marking the launch of Blxckie’s highly awaited new single, “South.”
A Tribute to South African Culture and Hip-Hop Artistry
Karabo Poppy, a celebrated artist and illustrator known for her unique style and ability to capture the spirit of South Africa, brings her vision to life in this mural. As one of the leading voices in contemporary African art, Poppy’s work draws from the deep cultural roots of South Africa while offering a modern twist that resonates with youth culture. The mural in Braamfontein stands as a beacon of resilience, creativity, and the power of self-expression—values central to Sprite’s mission.
The mural’s location, Cheeky’s in Braamfontein, is one of Johannesburg’s most dynamic social hotspots. This venue, often frequented by the Gen Z crowd, was the ideal setting for the mural’s unveiling, coinciding with the launch event for Blxckie’s new single, “South”—a momentous occasion in the South African hip-hop scene.

Blxckie’s Journey Captured Through Art
The mural is not just a work of art but a visual story that narrates Blxckie’s personal journey from humble beginnings in Durban to achieving global recognition. Each symbol and figure in the mural tells a part of his story—some moments are overt, others are subtly woven into the art, sparking curiosity and inviting viewers to explore the depth of Blxckie’s rise to stardom.
This collaboration between Spriteand Blxckieis a perfect manifestation of Sprite’s global brand platform, “Heat Happens, Stay Cool.” The phrase encapsulates Blxckie’s own path, which is defined by overcoming challenges and staying cool under pressure, even in the face of adversity. Blxckie’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of self-belief, hard work, and resilience in the pursuit of success.
Sprite’s Commitment to Supporting Creatives
“We are incredibly proud to have partnered with Karabo Poppy on this mural,” said Franscoe Bouwer, Senior Marketing Director for South Africa at Coca-Cola Africa. “Karabo has done an incredible job capturing Blxckie’s inspiring journey, and we hope this mural motivates young people to believe in their own potential. Our partnership with Sprite Limelight is all about uplifting creative voices and supporting meaningful connections through art and music.”

Karabo Poppy’s Creative Process and Vision
Karabo Poppyshared her excitement about the collaboration: “What caught my attention about the Sprite campaign was their ongoing investment in African creativity. The idea that a brand like Sprite is highlighting the work of young South African creatives is incredibly exciting to me. And, of course, Sprite has always been my favorite soft drink, so it was an easy ‘yes’ for me.”
Reflecting on the creative process, Poppy noted the challenges and rewards of working on such a large-scale project: “The building where the mural is located had many windows, which presented a new challenge for me. I had to think differently and approach the mural as a collection of individual illustrations, rather than one solid image. The open space at the top of the building added an interesting dimension to the work, something I rarely get to explore in my murals.”
When asked about the honor of leaving her mark on Braamfontein, a cultural hub of South Africa, Poppy expressed her pride: “It’s such an honor to be part of Braamfontein, a space overflowing with creative potential. To contribute to this vibrant community through my art is an incredible privilege.”
Advice for Young Creatives
Karabo Poppy also offered valuable advice for aspiring artists: “Celebrate your unique voice. While inspiration is important, the true power of creativity lies in crafting something original that the world hasn’t seen before. Don’t follow trends—focus on creating something that’s yours and yours alone.”
Braamfontein: The Heart of Johannesburg’s Creative Culture
Braamfontein has long been recognized as a vibrant cultural center in Johannesburg, known for its bustling energy, youthful vibe, and artistic spirit. The mural by Karabo Poppy adds to the area’s growing collection of public art, transforming the space into a must-see landmark for both locals and visitors alike. As a gathering place for creatives, entrepreneurs, and hip-hop fans, Braamfontein continues to solidify its status as a key player in Johannesburg’s cultural scene.
