Johannesburg is set to experience a high-impact cultural moment as Sheer City arrives in the city for a one-night underground takeover, following its inaugural two-day block party in downtown Cape Town.
Sheer City joins forces with VNJ BALL, the city’s legendary inclusive ballroom movement, to present a powerful convergence of sound, style, movement and community across Club AM and Carfax. Designed as a late-night celebration of underground nightlife culture, the Johannesburg edition distils the spirit of Sheer City into a focused, high-energy club experience rooted in expression, freedom and collective authorship.
Running from 20:00 till late, the event brings together global and local selectors at the forefront of contemporary electronic music, headlined by Cinthie (GER), Make A Dance (UK) and Esa (SA/UK). Together, the lineup reflects Sheer City’s founding intention: a return to rave culture in its purest form, driven by exceptional selectors, deep musical intelligence and dance floors shaped by community rather than spectacle.
At its core, the Johannesburg edition is a collaboration with VNJ BALL, whose influence has been instrumental in shaping inclusive, expressive dancefloor culture in the city. For this night, VNJ BALL unites some of Joburg’s most respected underground collectives and communities, including Living Machines, The Loft, Movement is Medicine and The Breakfast Club, transforming Carfax into a ballroom-infused rave space where music, movement and identity collide.
Across both Club AM and Carfax, the night unfolds as a multi-room experience that honours Johannesburg’s deep-rooted club legacy while pushing it forward. It is an invitation into a sharedspace where queer culture, electronic music and underground communities intersect without hierarchy. From peak-time house and techno to ballroom energy and late-night release, each room becomes part of a larger constellation of sound, bodies and intention.
The name Sheer remains intentional and playful. It holds he, she and her as a nod to fluidity, the thrill of stepping into the unknown. In Johannesburg, Sheer City becomes a statement of continuity and connection, linking Cape Town’s multi-venue block party ethos with Joburg’s uncompromising club culture.
