The digital dating scene is experiencing a seismic shift, as Gen Z singles in South Africa are clocking in approximately 142 hours annually on dating apps—equating to nearly six full days—only to form an average of just five meaningful connections. This staggering statistic highlights the growing disillusionment with the “swipe-by” culture, prompting many to seek deeper, more authentic relationships.
A Cultural Shift Toward Authenticity
Recent research commissioned by Knorr reveals that 77.8% of Gen Z singles question the authenticity of online dating profiles. A staggering 75% admit they struggle to find partners whose priorities align with their own. As swipe fatigue sets in, an unexpected hero emerges: cooking.
The survey indicates that 80% of South African respondents find an interest in cooking incredibly attractive in a potential partner. Kitchen confidence charms 80.8% of singles, while 81.4% are enamored by anyone willing to cook for others. In fact, cooking has emerged as the most appealing trait for 80% of Gen Z singles, surpassing fitness enthusiasts and luxury car owners.

#DateMyCookFriend: Cooking Up Connections
In response to this trend, Knorr has launched the #DateMyCookFriend campaign, designed to blend food and friendship, ultimately redefining modern dating. By encouraging individuals to recommend their single, culinary-minded friends, Knorr aims to pivot away from the impersonal nature of dating apps and promote genuine connections.
Inspired by the viral “Date My Friend” trend, the campaign invites users to share details about their single friends on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, using the hashtag #DateMyCookFriend. Knorr will amplify standout videos, giving these culinary singles a chance to shine and reach a broader audience.
Real-Life Connections in the Kitchen
Knorr is also facilitating in-person events to further cultivate these connections. Partnering with local farmers’ markets, such as the Prison Break Market and Fourways Farmers Market, the brand is hosting meet-ups where friends can play wingman for their single foodie friends. These gatherings provide a unique opportunity to transform online interactions into real-world experiences, emphasizing the idea that love truly begins in the kitchen.
