The TX Theatre Hub Festival returns to The Market Theatre from 23 to 26 July 2026, bringing five powerful productions that celebrate township storytelling and independent theatre.
Following a successful showcase at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, the four-day festival will feature award-winning productions including Dark Magic by Masai Sepuru, Chasing Laughter by Isaac Sithole, Adam’s Ale by Mxolisi Masilela, Untitled Deeds by Moruti Dlamini, and Solly Ramatswi’s new production, Sinking.
The festival is presented in partnership with The Market Theatre and aims to create more opportunities for township-based theatre-makers by providing access to major stages, audiences and industry networks. TX Theatre Hub Artistic Director Mxolisi Masilela said the initiative is about building a sustainable theatrical ecosystem that values access, collaboration and artistic excellence.
As part of the 2026 programme, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will support free technical workshops for women in theatre. Running throughout the festival, the workshops will focus on producing, directing, administration and technical theatre, with registration required for participation.
Ahead of the festival, TX Theatre Hub hosted a symbolic 40-kilometre walk from Tembisa to The Market Theatre on Mandela Day. The walk highlighted the challenges township storytellers face in accessing mainstream stages, funding and audiences, while also serving as a message of mentorship and inspiration for emerging theatre-makers.
The Market Theatre Artistic Director Greg Homann welcomed the festival’s return, saying the partnership strengthens the institution’s commitment to community-based storytelling and creating space for diverse South African voices.
